Morning hike on Mt Moriya
Hike date: August 6
With thunderstorms threatened for the afternoon, I changed my plans for the day and headed out early to nearby Mt Moriya. It's a good morning hike just a few minutes drive from my house that would get me back in time before the rain fell. I decided to take the long course up the mountain beginning at the famous Suwa Taisha shrine. After a steep, relentless climb through the forest and past the numerous bear warnings I finally arrived unscathed at the east peak. Here there were panoramic views over the town and the lake, but with thick ominous clouds clearly visible over the surrounding mountains. From there it was a 20-minute undulating hike to the highest point of the mountain at the west peak. After having met no one on the climb, there were a surprising amount of people for so early in the morning. I think everyone had seen the same weather forecast as me and were preparing to rush down before the promised storm.
