Battered by wind on Mt Tairappyo and Mt Sennokura

Hike date: August 14, 2026

This was my second time on Mt Tairappyo. The first time the weather had not been great and there was limited time, so this time I was determined to make the diversion along the undulating ridge line for my first visit to Mt Sennokura. There were surprisingly few vehicles in the trailhead car park, but I had high hopes for the hike and climbed the steep and seemingly endless wooden steps in anticipation of views to nearby Mt Tanigawa. Unfortunately the cloud was in and views were limited when I emerged onto the ridge line at the minor peak of Mt Matsute. The wooden steps continued but as I got higher the wind became intense and cold, and I had to put on my rain jacket and hood just to prevent my cap from flying off. I finally arrived at Tairappyo peak and stubbornly decided to continue with my quest to Sennokura, despite not being able to see a thing through the thick cloud. I was more preoccupied with trying to stay on my feet than observing the wildflowers this area is famous for. Battered by the wind I finally made it and descended the mountain via the Tairappyo mountain hut on the south side of the mountain towards Gunma. Of course the clouds started to lift from the ridge as I made my way down the steep trail into the sticky humid forest and along the long forest road that led from the hut back to the trailhead.
