Easy access ridge line with views of Mt Tateshina

Yashigamine (Japanese: 八子ヶ峰) is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ridge‑walk mountains in the Yatsugatake region. It's a long, undulating spine of gentle highland terrain that feels welcoming in every season, and is an easy walk even in the snow if you have the right equipment. It’s the kind of mountain where you can settle into a relaxed rhythm, breathing the cool air and watching the landscape open gradually as you move along the ridge.

Access is simple from either end. On the eastern side, the ski resort near Lake Shirakaba provides a broad, convenient starting point, with open slopes that quickly lead you into the highlands. On the western side, the Megami-no-Chaya trailhead offers a quieter forest approach that in winter doubles as the main trailhead for Mt. Tateshina. From either direction, the climb is gentle, and the ridge soon reveals its easy, rolling character.

The views from Yashigamine are excellent. Mt Tateshina (蓼科山) rises nearby, its volcanic cone dominating the skyline, while the full sweep of the Yatsugatake range stretches beyond it in layered ridges. You can aslo see the grasslands of Kirigamine (霧ヶ峰) on the other side of the lake.

I’ve walked this ridge in all seasons including snowshoeing across its broad winter slopes, wandering through summer meadows, and enjoying crisp autumn air. Yashigamine may be a simple climb, but its openness, accessibility and beautiful views make it one of the most rewarding easy hikes in the region.
