Skiing mountain in Shiga Kogen
Mt Yakebitai (焼額山) rises on the eastern side of Shiga Kōgen, a high volcanic plateau in northern Nagano known for its interconnected ski fields, wetlands and airy alpine ridges. At 2,013 metres, it is not the tallest peak in the area, yet its long, rounded form and broad summit plateau make it one of the most characteristic mountains of the Shiga highlands
Topographically, Yakebitai is shaped by ancient lava flows that have softened into wide ridges and gentle slopes. The mountain offers a spacious, rolling highland atmosphere. Forests cover the lower slopes, while the upper ridges open into grassy clearings and ski meadows that become quiet, panoramic viewpoints outside winter. From the summit, the views stretch across the Shiga plateau with nearby Mt Iwasuge (岩菅山) especially prominent.
The hike from the Prince Hotel area is the most accessible route, and is the one I chose. Even though there was thick cloud, the route was easy to follow. Beginning near the ski lifts, the trail climbs steadily through cool forest, following wide ski slopes before transitioning into natural alpine terrain. As you ascend, the forest thins and the ridge begins to open, revealing the characteristic highland scenery: broad slopes, scattered volcanic rock and long views across the plateau. The final approach to the summit is gentle, and contains a surprise with a large alpine lake next to the high-point marker.
