Symbolic peak of Iida city

Mt Kazakoshi (Japanese: 風越山) is a quiet peak above Iida in southern Nagano. It's a modest but beautifully shaped satoyama mountain whose long ridges and shape make it distinct from the sharper peaks of the Central Alps to the west. Its topography includes broad forested slopes, pockets of exposed rock a forested peak. From certain points there are unexpectedly wide views over the Ina Valley. Because it stands slightly apart from the major ranges, Mt Kazakoshi has the feeling of an independent peakthat is close to town, but wrapped in deep forest. It shouldn't be confused with its namesake peak in the Kiso valley, which is on the other side of the Central Alps.

For people in Iida and the surrounding villages, Kazakoshi is a familiar landmark, a place for seasonal walking, shrine visits and quiet half‑day climbs. The hiking course is straightforward. Most hikers including me begin from the lower forest roads on the Iida side, where a well‑maintained trail enters cool mixed forest and climbs steadily along the ridge. The ascent involves soft earth paths, occasional rocky steps and long stretches of cedar and broadleaf forest. As the trail rises, small openings in the trees offer early views of the valley. It was not the most exciting of peaks for me, but it was a gentle relaxing hike with the occasional good view.
