Easy afternoon hike

Mt Meshimori (Japanese: 飯盛山) is a gentle eastern‑Nagano peak that feels perfectly suited to a quiet day in the mountains, especially after a long, demanding hike the day before. It’s an easy, calming climb, the kind of walk where you settle into a comfortable rhythm and let the landscape open gradually around you. The trail rises steadily but never steeply, moving through light forest and grassy clearings before emerging onto the mountain’s distinctive pointy summit. You can return back the way you came, or via the slightly more strenuous Mr Hirasawa.

That summit is what makes Meshimori special. It’s a small, sharp, grassy peak that stands alone, giving you a surprisingly expansive panorama for such a modest mountain. The views are outstanding with Mt Fuji (富士山) rising far to the south in perfect symmetry, Mt Kinpu’s (金峰山) granite crown dominating the Okuchichibu skyline, and the full sweep of Yatsugatake (八ヶ岳) stretching across the horizon to the west.

The atmosphere is peaceful throughout. The climb is short and family-friendly, the terrain gentle, and the mountain rarely crowded. There are also various attractions a short drive away, despite the relative remoteness of the location. It’s a place where you can walk slowly, breathe deeply, and enjoy the quiet beauty of Nagano’s eastern highlands without any pressure or difficulty. For me, Meshimori is the ideal recovery mountain, a graceful peak that offers big views with minimal effort.
