Mt Kagonoto

Mt Kagonoto (Japanese: 篭ノ登山) rises quietly on the border of Nagano and Gunma, a rugged peak of the Asama range that offers far more variety and atmosphere than its height might suggest. Most hikers approach it from the Ikenotaira marshland, where a paid car park and gentle trails make access easy. But no matter the season, I prefer the longer, more rewarding route from Jizō pass. The free ski resort car park there is spacious, and the climb feels like a true mountain outing. It’s steep in places, quiet and beautifully framed by the forests of eastern Nagano.

 

Kagonoto has two summits: the broad, rocky east peak (東篭ノ登山), which most hikers visit first, and the craggy west peak (西東篭ノ登山), reached by a 30‑minute traverse down into a valley and back up again. The contrast between the two is striking. The east peak feels open and expansive, while the west peak is sharper, more dramatic, and offers a slightly wilder atmosphere. Both overlook the Ikenotaira marshland far below, a patchwork of wetlands and forest that adds a sense of depth to the landscape.

 

In winter, Kagonoto becomes an excellent snowshoe mountain. The forest road to Ikenotaira closes, but the route from Jizō Pass remains accessible, and the snow-covered ridges offer wide, 360‑degree views. On clear days you can see Mt. Fuji or even the distant North Alps, but the real highlight is the close, commanding view of Mt Asama. Its volcanic slopes dominate the horizon, sometimes steaming faintly, always reminding you of the raw geological energy that shaped this region.

 

In the green season, Kagonoto is equally enjoyable. The climb can be combined with walks around the marsh or with hikes to other nearby peaks, creating a full day of exploration in one of Nagano’s quieter mountain areas. It’s not a difficult climb, but it has just enough steepness and variety to feel satisfying.

 

For me, Mt Kagonoto is a mountain that rewards repeat visits with broad views, peaceful forests, and the ever‑present silhouette of Mt Asama watching over the ridge.
