Easy year-round hiking near Kirigamine

Mt Washigamine (Japanese: 鷲ヶ峰) sits quietly on the western edge of the Kirigamine (霧ヶ峰) plateau, a modest peak with an easygoing character and some of the finest views in the region. From its summit you look down over the wide sweep of the Yashima marsh, a beautiful highland wetland that changes colour with the seasons, and beyond it Lake Suwa glimmers far below. Further away, the Yatsugatake range (八ヶ岳) rises in a long volcanic line to the east, and the South and North Alps stand in crisp silhouette on clear days.

The topography around Washigamine is gentle and open with rolling highland terrain rather than steep mountain slopes. The Kirigamine plateau is famous for its broad grasslands, scattered shrubs and pockets of dwarf bamboo, all shaped by wind and long winters. In summer the meadows fill with wildflowers, and in autumn the grasses turn gold. Wildlife includes deer, hawks circling above the ridges, foxes moving through the grass and hardy alpine plants clinging to the thin soil.

The hike itself is easy and can be enjoyed year‑round, although the trailhead car park at Yashima can be crowded in certain seasons. In the green season, the gentle incline is perfect for a relaxed half‑day walk. In winter, the plateau transforms into a wide white world, and Washigamine becomes an excellent snowshoe destination. The slopes are gentle enough for safe travel, yet high enough to offer expansive views over the surrounding mountains. In all seasons, a climb up Washigamine can be enjoyed with a circular loop hike around the marshlands.
