Tough but rewarding forest walk
Mt Ogi or Ogiyama (Japanese: 扇山) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* that rises sharply above Otsuki in eastern Yamanashi. It it rises directly from the valley below, an abrupt, angular ridge that catches the morning light and as the name ogi suggests looks almost like a folded fan above the town.
The mountain’s significance is mainly local and is often climbed by people seeking to complete the Yamanashi 100. There's a steep drive to the trailhead and a small car park deep in the forest. The contrast between the steep mountain and the gentle agricultural landscape gives Ogiyama a distinctive presence in the region.
I climbed it using the short, steep hike from Nashinoki‑daira. The trail begins on a quiet forest road, entering dense woodland almost immediately. From the first steps, the ascent is sustained and direct. The ridge rises sharply, with earthy slopes and rocky steps that hint at the mountain’s cliff‑like structure. The forest is close and quiet, but small openings appear as you climb, offering glimpses of other mountains and the the valley below. Higher up, the ridge tightens and steepens before easing onto the small summit crest. Most of the climb is in deep forest. I climbed it immediately after Momokura and found it to be a good workout.
