Pleasant wooded hike in Otsuki city
Mt Momukura (Japanese: 桃倉山) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* that rises above the Katsunuma and Enzan area of eastern Yamanashi. It's a steep, compact mountain whose rocky spine and narrow ridges give it a surprisingly rugged character for its height. Its topography is defined by sharp forested slopes, a long, tilted ridge, and an upper crest where the trees thin just enough to reveal wide views over the Kōfu Basin and the surrounding mountains.
For generations, Momukura has been a familiar landmark for the wine‑growing towns below, a place where villagers climbed for seasonal festivals, small shrine visits or simply to look out over the patchwork of vineyards and orchards that define the Katsunuma region. Its summit ridge offers a surprisingly broad panorama including Daibosatsu (大菩薩嶺) rising to the northwest, Mitsutōge (三峠山) and Fuji (富士山) to the south and the long line of the Chichibu mountains stretching east toward Okutama.
The hike is short but steep, and makes it feel like a genuine mountain climb despite the modest elevation. The hiking route begins from the lower forest roads, where the trail immediately enters dense woodland and begins a sustained ascent along the ridge. I found it to be a short but fun hike with a variety of trails to choose from.
