Stunning views over Lake Yamanaka
Mt Ishiwari (Japanese: 石割山) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* that rises above Lake Yamanaka in the east of the prefecture. It's famous for its steep forested slopes, a sharp upper ridge and the dramatic presence of Ishiwari Shrine and its famous split boulder. Although not so high, Ishiwari feels larger because it stands directly above the lake, its summit opening into a wide, unobstructed panorama of Mt Fuji (富士山) and Lake Yamanaka below.
Apart from the view, this mountain’s defining feature is Ishiwari shrine, located near the upper slopes, where a massive boulder split cleanly down the middle is the shrine’s sacred object. This rock has long been a site of local worship. Visitors traditionally pass through the narrow gap three times for good fortune. The summit itself is an open, grassy crest with sweeping views.
The standard hike begins at the red torii gate near the Ishiwari shrine trailhead, although I parked my car by the lakeside so I could complete a long loop hike. The route immediately climbs a long staircase of 403 stone steps that serves as the mountain’s symbolic gateway. Beyond the steps, the trail enters quiet forest and follows a gentle ridge toward Fujimidaira. The path then continues to Ishiwari shrine, where the split boulder stands in a shaded clearing. From here, the climb steepens: exposed roots, rocky pitches, and short, sharp ascents lead toward the summit ridge. The final approach opens suddenly into bright grassland, revealing Fuji and Lake Yamanaka spread out below.
