Long hike with close-up views of Fuji
Mt Mishotai (Japanese: 御正体山) is a nihyakumeizan* and Yamanashi hyakumeizan** that rises quietly to the east of Mt Fuji (富士山). Its topography is shaped by a long, forested spine that climbs steadily from the valley until reaching the quiet forested summit. Although most of the hike is within the trees, there are a number of view points throughout the hike, including some with close-up views of Mt Fuji (富士山) to the west and the valley below.
Mishotai is known as a long, tough climb with relatively difficult access. When I was there in the spring I had forgotten to check access and found that the forest road to the car park was still closed, requiring an extra long walk to even get to the starting point. The ascent is sustained but never technical or dangerous. Mishotai is a mountain closely associated with religious beliefs and there are the remains of a number of religious sites on the ascent. It's certainly not the most spectacular of hikes, but I recommend it for views of Fuji or for those looking for a quiet day in the mountains.
