Tough hike with big views

Mt Takigo (Japanese: 滝子山) rises above Ōtsuki City in Yamanashi, a long, forested Yamanashi hyakumeizan* mountain whose ridges and waterfalls give it a distinctive presence among the peaks lining the JR Chūō Line corridor. It is one of Yamanashi’s celebrated mountains, selected among the finest viewpoints of Mt Fuji (富士山). Its topography includes steep lower valleys carved by streams, broad wooded ridges and a summit composed of three small peaks that together form a spacious, panoramic crest.

From the top, the views are unexpectedly grand. Mt. Fuji rises directly to the south, while to the north there are fine views of the ridges of the Daibosatsu range. On clear days, the horizon stretches toward Yatsugatake and the Southern Alps, giving the summit a full 360‑degree sweep.

The long hiking course is part of what makes Mt. Takigo memorable. Most hikers begin from Sasago Station, following a stream‑side trail that climbs gradually through quiet forest and past small waterfalls. The ascent is steady, gaining roughly 1,000 metres over a distance of 14 km, making it one of the more demanding day hikes along the Chūō Line. The route eventually reaches the main ridge, where the forest thins and the terrain opens into airy viewpoints before the final approach to the summit’s three peaks. The descent typically continues toward Hatsukari Station, completing a remote and varied traverse.
