Gentle traverse with beautiful views
Mt Mikuni (Japanese:三国山) and Mt Ohora (大洞山) are the major peaks of a long, undulating ridge that rises on the southern rim of Lake Yamanaka. The ridge has wide, wooded shoulders, soft volcanic soil and open areas that present fine views of the surrounding mountains and lake below. From various points, the view opens toward Mt Fuji (富士山), the Yamanaka basin, and the long line of the Tanzawa (丹沢 ) mountains to the southeast. These are not dramatic peaks, but the views and relatively mild climate draws hikers throughout the year.
The hike is gentle and steady, making the traverse a perfect outing whose length can be adjusted according to the time available. Most hikers begin from the Mikuni pass trailhead, where the path enters cool forest and follows a broad ridge toward the summit. The ascent is gradual and wooded with occasional openings through the trees. If you have time as I did, you can walk the full length of the ridge and back again. It's also possible to head down towards Lake Yamanaka.
