Walk in the Yamanashi woods

Mt Torinomune (Japanese: 鳥の胸山) sometimes pronounced Tonnomune is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* located in the forests of Dōshi in eastern Yamanashi. It's a sharply defined, independent peak that is visible from the roadside station trailhead and whose name translates as chicken breast mountain. The mountain’s topography is simple but striking: a long, wooded spine climbing directly from the valley, tightening into root‑laced pitches and short rocky steps before reaching a broad wooded summit.

The hike is straightforward yet vigorous. Most climbers begin near Michi‑no‑Eki Dōshi, which is the only place nearby where parking is allowed. The trail enters quiet forest and begins a steady ascent along the ridge. The lower slopes are gentle, but the climb soon steepens, with earthy inclines, exposed roots and occasional rocky sections. As the ridge rises, the forest thins and small openings appear, offering early glimpses of the surrounding Dōshi mountains and sometimes even Mt Fuji (富士山).

This is not a dramatic peak but I enjoyed it for its solitude and forested trails. There are a number of hiking trails and it's possible to do a loop walk back to the roadside station.
