Demanding hike on the west of the Fuji rim
Mt Chōjagatake (Japanese: 長者ヶ岳) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* that rises quietly on the border of Yamanashi and Shizuoka, a long, forested ridge that forms part of the outer foothills west of Mt Fuji (富士山). It's not a sharply defined peak but rather a broad, rolling highland that is part of an undulating ridge. Its position above Lake Tanuki makes it one of the most scenic lakeside settings in the Fuji region.
The topography of Chōjagatake is shaped by gentle volcanic uplift. The lower slopes are wrapped in dense forest while the upper ridges open into airy clearings where Fuji suddenly appears. The mountain’s long crest runs north–south, offering repeated viewpoints toward Fuji, the South Alps and the Izu and Misaka ranges.
The loop hiking course from Lake Tanuki is the way many hikers including me enjoy this mountain. Starting from the lakeside, the trail climbs steadily through cool forest, gaining height gradually before reaching the main ridge. The ascent is long but never severe, with occasional glimpses of the surrounding mountains and the lake below. Once on the ridge, the trail becomes a flowing traverse, passing minor peaks and viewpoints until it reaches the broad summit area of Chōjagatake. From here, the loop continues southward through Mt Tenshi (天使ヶ岳) before descending back towards the lake.
