Tough loop hike with good access and great views

Mt Honjagamaru (Japanese: 本社ヶ丸) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* with long, forested ridges and a loop trail that make it a rewarding full‑day hike. It stands just north of the Doshi River valley, forming part of the broad mountainous wall that separates Yamanashi from Kanagawa. Its topography is gentle rather than dramatic with a summit area that opens into wide, grassy clearings with unexpectedly expansive views.

The classic Honjagamaru experience is the long loop hike, a circuit that begins from the Doshi side and climbs steadily through quiet forest before gaining the main ridge. This is the course I used. The ascent is gradual, following old forestry paths and soft, mossy ground. Once on the ridge, the trail becomes a flowing traverse, rising and falling gently as it passes minor high points and occasional openings where Mt Fuji (富士山) appears through the trees. To the north, the mountains of Yamanashi stretch toward the South Alps.

The summit of Honjagamaru is a grassy clearing ringed by trees. From here, the loop continues along the ridge before descending through another long stretch of forest, completing a circuit that feels both remote and peaceful. For me, it was a long but rewarding day hike. The hike starts and ends at Sasago station making it convenient for access, even for those without cars.
