Quiet but interesting hike from the lakeside
Mt Hiru or Hirugatake (Japanese: 蛭ヶ岳) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* mountain that rises quietly above Lake Shibire in southern Yamanashi. Not to be confused with its namesake peak in the Tanzawa range, Hirugatake is a compact but beautifully shaped peak whose long forested ridges and gentle upper slopes give it a calm, satoyama‑like character. The mountain is defined by its beautiful lakeside trailhead, broad wooded shoulders, soft earth paths and a summit that opens into surprisingly wide views toward Mt Fuji (富士山).
The trailhead at Lake Shibire is a highlight even before you start walking. The trail begins near a quiet campsite and related facilities. From the first steps, the path climbs steadily through tall trees, following a ridge that rises cleanly from the shore. The ascent is gentle but continuous with occasional narrow sections where the ridge tightens. As you climb, the forest gradually thins, and small openings reveal glimpses of the surrounding mountains. The summit clearing appears suddenly with fine views of Fuji if you are lucky with the weather.
There are a few trails in the area and I completed a circuit around the lake before returning to the starting point. There were very few hikers on this mountain and it's an excellent climb for those who like a quiet hike.
