Steep peak above the lake
Mt Juni or Junigatake (Japanese: 十二ヶ岳), meaning the 12th mountain, rises sharply above the northern shore of Lake Sai (Saiko, 西湖), one of the five lakes around Mt Fuji (富士山). It's a steep, compact Yamanashi hyakumeizan* peak that offers one of the prefecture's most rewarding short climbs. It’s not a famous mountain, nor a long or technical one, but its position is perfect. It's set just far enough back from the lake to give you a sweeping, unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji.
Parking is limited around the lake so take care to arrive early and find a suitable spot. The climb begins near the tunnel by the quiet lakeside, where the forest closes in quickly and the trail wastes no time in heading upward. Mt Juni is steep from the start, pulling you through tight switchbacks and narrow paths lined with mossy stones and tall trees. The topography is simple but satisfying: a straightforward ascent up a single ridge, gaining height rapidly until the forest begins to thin and the light changes.
As you approach the summit, the trees open just enough to reveal glimpses of Fuji through the branches. The summit itself is small and rocky, a modest perch that feels perfectly placed. From here, the view is magnificent. Lake Sai lies directly below, a deep blue mirror framed by forest, and beyond it rises Mt Fuji. Mt Juni may be a relatively minor peak, but its steep climb, quiet forest, and superb Fuji views make it one of the hidden gems of the Fuji Five Lakes region.
