Quiet wooded mountain with Fuji summit view
Mt Konara (Japanese: 小楢山) is a modest Yamanashi hyakumeizan* peak that rises quietly above the Makioka district in northern Yamanashi. It is a broad, wooded peak with steady ridges and a summit area with outstanding views of Mt Fuji (富士山).
Its significance lies in its position along the northern arc of the Misaka range, a quiet chain that forms the natural boundary between Yamanashi’s fruit‑growing basin and the deep interior valleys leading toward Nishikatsura and Fujiyoshida. Mt Konara is one of the higher points of this range, and its long, wooded ridges have historically served as local watershed divides feeding the local river system. For hikers, it represents the quieter side of Yamanashi’s mountains.
The hiking course from Makioka is long and I didn't meet anyone until the summit. The ascent follows the ridge line, gaining height steadily without technical difficulty. There are occasional views of other mountains through the trees until you arrive at the summit. The final approach to the summit is gentle, a quiet walk through high forest that leads to a broad, understated crest marked by a small clearing and signpost.
