Panoramic views of Fuji

Mt Mitsutoge (Japanese: 三垰山) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan*mountain. It's a relatively short and easy hike that rewards you with some of the finest panoramas of Lake Kawaguchi and Mt Fuji (富士山). Unless you decide to climb the longer course from the valley below, it’s a mountain that doesn’t demand much in terms of physical effort, yet offers the kind of scenery usually reserved for far higher peaks.

The topography is gentle and welcoming. Forested paths lead steadily upward, weaving through cedar and broadleaf trees before opening onto rocky viewpoints and wide ledges. Mitsutoge’s ridgeline is broad, with several lookout points that frame Fuji perfectly with its summit rising above the lake and the Fuji Five Lakes region. Because the mountain sits at just the right angle and distance, the view of Fuji feels balanced and iconic like a carefully composed photograph.

From the car park on the pass the hike is straightforward with well‑maintained trails and only occasional steep sections. Families, casual hikers and photographers all make their way up Mitsutoge, especially on weekends and holidays. That accessibility means the mountain can become crowded at busy times, particularly during peak foliage or when the weather promises clear views of Fuji.

Mitsutoge is a mountain that proves you don’t need a long or difficult climb to experience truly memorable alpine scenery. I've climbed it a couple of times, but prefer to go early morning when the air is clear and the there are fewer people around.
