Sacred forested peak
Mt Minobu (Japanese: 身延山) is a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* mountain where hiking and temple culture blend into a single experience. Rising behind the historic temple complex of Kuonji, it is a heavily forested peak whose slopes feel steep, humid and deeply atmospheric. The mountain sits at the heart of Minobu’s spiritual landscape, and climbing it means weaving through a network of temples, gates and old pilgrimage paths before entering the quiet forest that leads toward the summit.
I went there in summer, and it was brutally hot. The trail rises steeply from the base, winding through dense trees and patches of exposed roots. Eventually, the forest thins and you reach the upper temple complex, where the atmosphere changes completely. After hours of sweating up the slopes, I suddenly found myself surrounded by casually dressed tourists who had arrived via the ropeway, strolling comfortably around the summit area.
The contrast is striking between a demanding climb through deep forest followed by a lively, accessible mountaintop filled with visitors enjoying the views and temple grounds. The summit itself is gentle and wooded, but the surrounding ridgeline offers glimpses of the valleys and mountains of southern Yamanashi and the South Alps to the west. For hikers, the mountain can be done as a long loop course, linking forest trails with temple paths and offering a full day of varied terrain.
