Quiet forest walk in Saitama

Mt Ryōkami (Japanese: 両神山) is one of the quieter hyakumeizan*, a forested peak rising from the deep interior of Saitama and offering a very different atmosphere from Japan’s more dramatic alpine summits, and indeed from the popular image of that highly populated prefecture. Its slopes are wrapped in dense woodland, and the mountain has a calm, understated presence that rewards hikers who appreciate solitude, subtle beauty, and long, steady climbs rather than sweeping ridgelines or volcanic drama.

The approach begins through thick forest, following old paths that wind gradually upward. Ryōkami is not a mountain of grand vistas until you reach the top and catch views of surrounding mountains. Instead, the climb is defined by the rhythm of the woods with broadleaf trees, moss‑covered stones and the quiet movement of birds and small animals. In summer, the forest is lush and humid, while in autumn the trail glows with warm colours. The mountain’s flora is rich, and its fauna includes deer, foxes, and a wide variety of woodland birds that thrive in the protected valleys.

As you ascend, the trail steepens, weaving through rocky sections that hint at the ruggedness of the Chichibu region. The summit itself is modest but atmospheric, offering views over the surrounding mountains and deep folds of forest that stretch across western Saitama. Ryōgami may not have the dramatic profile or views of other mountains, but its quiet trails, rich forest and gentle summit make it a  mountain that embodies the quieter side of Japan’s hiking tradition.
