Remote mountain with fantastic rock formations
Mt Ogawa (Japanese: 小川山) sits on the remote western edge of Yamanashi, a mountain known less for sweeping summit views and more for the dramatic rock formations that dominate its lower slopes. It’s a place where geology takes center stage with towering pillars, sheer faces and rugged walls that have made the mountain a popular destination for rock climbers. The approach trail winds directly beneath these formations, giving hikers an up‑close look at the cliffs before the route turns inward toward the forest.
The highlights of the hike come early. The rock scenery is spectacular with great blocks of stone rising abruptly from the hillside, weathered into sharp angles and improbable shapes. Even if you’re not a climber, the atmosphere is striking, and the scale of the formations gives the mountain a bold, almost architectural presence.
After passing through this dramatic zone, the trail settles into a long, quiet and sheltered climb through deep forest, which is in contrast to the rocks around which you have passed. The mood shifts completely to tall trees, soft light and a steady ascent. There are no dangerous points along the way, just a sustained climb that gradually leads toward the summit ridge. The summit itself is modest and enclosed by trees, offering no real view.
Mt Ogawa may not have a panoramic summit, but its combination of dramatic rock formations, quiet forest, and remote atmosphere makes it a memorable mountain.
