Mt Kirito (Japanese: 霧訪山) is one of those small, unassuming mountains that quietly becomes part of a hiker’s life. Rising above Shiojiri to the north and Ono to the east , it’s a local favourite because it’s close enough for a spontaneous visit, gentle enough for beginners, yet varied enough to keep even seasoned walkers coming back. The mountain has a network of trails, which all converge on the summit. Hikers can enjoy rich greenery in summer, crisp leaf‑littered paths in autumn and a gentle layer of snow in winter.

Despite its modest height, Kirito offers moments of openness. From the summit, hikers can look out across the Matsumoto valley, with the North Alps rising beyond. Kirigamine lies to the east, its broad highlands catching the light in every season. Wildflowers brighten the trails in spring and early summer, and the mountain has many local visitors when the flowers are blooming.

I often visit Kirito early in the morning, when the air is cool and the paths are quiet. It’s a short hike so it’s ideal before or after other business in the area. A loop around the mountain from the Shimosaijo trailhead makes for a perfect outing with enough ups and downs to feel like real exercise, enough variety to stay interesting, and enough solitude to let the mind settle. No matter how many times I go, I never tire of the forest scenery. I enjoy the way the light filters through the trees, the sudden steep pitches and the gentle descents that lead downwards. It's a reminder that not every mountain has to have dramatic alpine or volcanic scenery.
