Ikeyama One trailhead

Underrated peak in the Central Alps

Mt Minamikoma (Japanese: 南駒ケ岳) is one of the quieter, more remote peaks of the Central Alps. It's a relatively unknown nihyakumeizan* mountain that offers a deep sense of solitude and the rugged beauty that defines this range. It sits tucked away south of the better known Mts Kisokoma (木曾駒ケ岳) and Utsugi (空木岳), separated by long ridges and deep valleys.

The topography is classic Central Alps but with a wilder edge. It's most often climbed via Mt Utsugi to the north, although I climbed it as part of a long traverse across the entire range. The lower slopes of the Ikeyama ridge that is the main approach to Utsugi rise through dense forest, steep and enclosed, with long stretches where the trail feels more like an old mountain path than a maintained route. Minamikoma’s summit is at the end of the ridge with the large boulders that are a characteristic of this part of the Central Alps.

The views from the summit are superb in their subtle way. To the north, the great dome of Kisokoma rises above the plateau; to the west, the deep valleys of Kiso stretch toward the horizon; and to the east, the folds of the Ina Valley and the distant Yatsugatake range (八ヶ岳) are visible. Mt Minamikoma is a mountain for hikers who appreciate remoteness, quiet ridges, and the understated beauty of the Central Alps. For me it was a mountain that greatly surpassed my expectations.
