Broad, grassy peak with expansive views

Fujimidai (Japanese: 富士見台) is one of the seven summits of Achi village in the southern part of Nagano. It isn’t a high or difficult mountain, but I often head there in winter with my snowshoes. The climb is a gentle but atmospheric walk through cold, open highlands. Winter here can be brutally cold and often windy, but that harshness is part of the mountain’s appeal. The snow season can be short due to the southern location, but it can also fall deeply.

From the summit area above the renowned Bangakuso mountain hut, the views are outstanding. Mt Ena (恵那山) rises close by, its long ridgeline catching the winter light, while Mt Ontake (御嶽山) dominates the horizon with its massive volcanic bulk. On clear days, the contrast between the white snowfields and the dark forms of these neighbouring peaks is breathtaking. Fujimidai may be modest in elevation, but its vantage point is superb.

In other seasons, the mountain is gentle and grassy, with broad trails and open views. The autumn colours are outstanding. But winter is when it feels most special to me. As part of the Achi seven summits, Fujimidai offers a perfect blend of accessibility and alpine atmosphere, a small mountain that becomes something much larger when the snow arrives.
