Asahi Kosen trailhead

Beautiful Tohoku peak

Mt Asahi (Japanese: 朝日岳) in Yamagata is one of the great mountains of the Tōhoku region. It's a vast, rugged hyakumeizan* peak whose scale becomes clear the moment you begin the long, demanding approach from Asahi Kōsen. This route is famous for being tough, remote and astonishingly beautiful. I used this course in autumn one year and was rewarded for my efforts with some of the finest scenery in northern Japan.

From the lodge at Asahi Kōsen, the trail rises steadily through deep forest. The topography is varied and dramatic. Lower down, the path winds through mossy stones, tight gullies and root‑laced slopes. As you climb higher, the forest begins to thin and the mountain opens into broad ridges and rocky outcrops. The terrain becomes more severe with steep sections that demand concentration, narrow traverses where the valley drops away sharply and long stretches where the mountain’s sheer size becomes unmistakable. Hikers should remember that this is bear country, and the remoteness of the Asahi range means encounters are not uncommon.

Once you reach the upper slopes, the landscape transforms. The ridgeline is wide and open, with sweeping views over the surrounding peaks of Yamagata and Niigata. The wetlands and alpine basins near the summit add a touch of softness to the otherwise rugged terrain, with patches of grassland and scattered ponds reflecting the sky.

The summit is called Mt Oasahi (大朝日岳) and is a true high‑mountain vantage point with wonderful sunrises as the name ("Mt great morning sun") suggests. I completed the journey back to the trailhead lodge using a long loop course.
