Misakubo trailhead

Deep south of the South Alps

Mt Kuroboshi (Japanese: 黒法師山) is one of the most remote and quietly demanding peaks in the South Alps. It's a sanbyakumeizan* mountain that feels far removed from the busy ridgelines and well‑trodden routes of the more famous summits. Reaching it requires patience from the very beginning. The forest road leading to the trailhead is long, narrow and in poor condition, winding deep into the mountains until you finally arrive at a small, lonely parking area. The length of the hike means that it's often necessary to stay at the trailhead car park before departing early the next morning.

The trail long moves through silent forest, climbing steadily but without the dramatic landmarks found on more popular routes. You meet very few people all day and the quiet can feel both peaceful and slightly unsettling. This is bear country, and hikers need to stay alert. The solitude that makes Kuroboshi appealing also means you are very much a guest in the animals’ territory.

The final ascent is where the mountain reveals its true character. The slope steepens sharply, rising in a punishing final push that demands concentration and stamina. The terrain is rough, the footing loose and the gradient relentless. Yet that difficulty is precisely what makes reaching the summit so satisfying. When you finally pull yourself onto the top, the sense of achievement is profound.

Mt Kuroboshi may not be well known, but its quiet ridges, demanding climb, and deep sense of remoteness make it a memorable peak to climb.
