Bulbous peak with panoramic sea views
Mt Nosaka (Japanese: 野坂岳) rises quietly above the coastal city of Tsuruga in Fukui Prefecture, a mountain that combines gentle lower slopes with a surprisingly atmospheric summit. It’s not a remote or particularly high peak, yet it has a distinctive character standing alone near the Sea of Japan, catching the coastal weather, and offering views that stretch far across both land and water.
The climb begins near the base of the mountain in the outskirts of Tsuruga, where forested paths lead upward through broadleaf trees and quiet valleys. The trail is well‑maintained and never overly steep, making Mt. Nosaka accessible to hikers of all levels. As you ascend, the forest gradually thins, and the ridge opens into wider views. The mountain’s topography is simple but pleasing with long, steady slopes, occasional rocky steps and a final steep ascent towards the summit.
Flora and fauna are typical of the region’s coastal mountains, but the bulbous summit is the highlight. From the top, Tsuruga Bay spreads out below in a wide arc, the coastline curving elegantly toward the horizon. On clear days, the Sea of Japan glitters in deep blue, and the inland mountains of Fukui are clearly visible.
Mt. Nosaka may not be a high or difficult peak, but it has a charm of its own that captures the quiet beauty of Fukui’s coastal landscape. I climbed it the day after summiting another more difficult Hokuriku mountain, and it proved to be a calming and restful experience.
