The mountain with the beach in the sky

Mt Hinata (Japanese: 日向山) is situated in Hokuto on the northern fringe of the South Alps. It's a Yamanashi hyakumeizan* known for its broad expanse of white granite at the summit that is sometimes called “the beach in the sky.” In recent years it has become popular on social media, with hikers posing on the white rock as if they were relaxing on a mountaintop shoreline. Despite its playful reputation, the climb itself is no casual stroll. The route rises steeply from the gorge below, making for a long, sustained workout through quiet forest.

Most of the ascent is enclosed by trees, but the reward comes suddenly at the top. The summit opens into a bright and spacious area with excellent views of nearby Mt Kaikoma (甲斐駒ヶ岳) and the Yatsugatake range. The contrast between the shaded forest and the sunlit beach can feel quite striking.

Although many hikers visit in summer for the iconic photos, I prefer Mt. Hinata in winter. The crowds thin out, the air becomes crisp, and the granite summit feels even more serene under a pale winter sky. With fewer people around, the mountain’s quiet beauty becomes more apparent, and the climb feels more like a true escape with the views of snow-capped Mt Kaikoma a great reward for the effort of getting there. Note that some of the minor trails around this peak have been closed due to collapse.

Mt Hinata may be famous for its Instagram-friendly summit, but its real charm lies in the steady climb, the peaceful forest, and the wide alpine views waiting at the top.
