Remote and imposing North Alps peak

Mt Yukikura (Japanese: 雪倉岳) is a nihyakumeizan* that is one of the true hidden peaks of the North Alps, a mountain located deep in the northern part of the range. It has none of the easy access points or famous ridgelines of the better‑known summits. Instead, Yukikura demands long approaches, careful planning, and a willingness to travel through some of the most remote terrain in Japan.

The topography around Yukikura is rugged and complex. The mountain rises in a series of broken ridges and steep, forested valleys, with long stretches of rocky terrain shaped by heavy snow and harsh weather. Its slopes feel wild and untouched, and the surrounding basins hold lingering snow well into early summer. The flora shifts quickly with altitude with forests in the lower reaches, then creeping pine, alpine grasses, and patches of hardy flowers as you climb higher.

Access is notoriously difficult and the mountain is generally climbed on the way through to another peak, rather than as a location in itself. I reached Yukikura as part of a long loop from Renge Onsen, traversing south toward Mt Shirouma (白馬岳) and then heading north again past Yurikura on the way to Mt. Asahi (朝日岳). That route captures the essence of the northern North Alps due to its huge elevation gain, long distances and a feeling of being far from any road or settlement. The climb to Yukikura itself is steep and demanding, with sections of rough trail through scree fields and long stretches where you feel completely alone in the mountains.
