Active volcano with spectacular views

Mt Yake (Japanese: 焼岳) is a hyakumeizan* that is one of the most compelling mountains in the North Alps. It’s an active volcano that rises above Kamikōchi with a unique shape and presence, and whose past eruptions have changed the landscape. Yake’s rocky summit is a lava dome sculpted by eruptions. Fumaroles sending up foul‑smelling sulphurous steam that remind you that this mountain is still very much alive. It’s one of my favourite climbs and a peak I try to visit every year between spring and autumn.

Most hikers approach Mt Yake from Abo Pass, where the access road typically opens in April. From there, the trail climbs steadily up through the forest before reaching the rocky valley that leads up to the peak. Hikers must then make a short but dramatic traverse in front of the crater with fumaroles perforating the rock. The views of Kamikochi, Mt Norikura and the Hotaka range are superb.

Mt. Yake has two summits: the north peak, which is the official and commonly climbed one, and the south peak, which has no trail and is normally off‑limits due to dangerous volcanic gases. However, when snow still covers the upper slopes, it’s possible to reach the south peak safely by staying on the snowpack that covers the thick undergrowth. Even then, caution is essential. The mountain is occasionally closed due to increased volcanic activity, and hikers should always check conditions before setting out.

Climbing Mt. Yake demands respect and requires preparation. Helmets are recommended, and awareness of the terrain and latest volcanic activity is crucial. But for those who make the ascent, the rewards are unforgettable.
