Forest, waterfalls and cliffs in northern Kyushu

Mt Sefuri (Japanese: 背振山) is a sanbyakumeizan* that rises quietly on the border of Fukuoka and Saga, a long, forested highland with gentle slopes and broad ridges. It's not a  wide, uplifted massif, its summit crowned by old beech forest, a small shrine, and a radar dome. From the top, the view opens in every direction, although it was covered in cloud when I visited.

For centuries, Sefuri was a place of mountain asceticism and old stone markers and small shrines appear beside the trail, mossed and half‑hidden. The mountain’s topography involves many waterfalls, long, wooded ridges, sudden rocky outcrops and deep, shaded valleys. Despite the weather, I did this hike as a full circuit hike. Starting from the lower trailheads, the path follows a stream and a series of waterfalls as it rises through forest toward the high ridge, where the terrain begins to open and the first viewpoints appear. The circuit includes dramatic rock formations that form cliffs that jut from the ridge and apparently offer sudden views across the peninsula. From there, the trail winds through quiet saddles and gentle rises until it reaches the summit of Mt. Sefuri itself, a broad, calm crest where the shrine stands just below the radar dome. The descent follows a different ridge, looping back through deep forest and returning gradually to the lowlands.
