Mt Osuzu (Japanese: 尾鈴山) is a nihyakumeizan* deep in the mountains of Miyazaki. It's a rugged region shaped by ancient volcanic uplift and long erosion. It is not a single sharp peak but a broad, forested highland, its upper slopes cut by ravines, its ridges lined with weathered rock and its summit opening into wide views over the interior of Miyazaki. It's a landscape where streams carve through dark stone, and the mountain is famous for its waterfalls.
The mountain forms part of a protected natural zone known for its rare plants, deep forest and untouched ridges. It stands as one of the more remote summits in the region and is visited far less often than the famous peaks of the range to the north.
Reaching the trailhead itself is already a challenge because the forest roads leading into the valley are narrow, winding and prone to washouts. This difficult approach sets the tone for the day. Once on foot, the trail climbs steadily through quiet forest, following steep slopes and small streams that tumble over rock. The ascent is long and shaded, rising toward the high ridge that forms the backbone of the mountain. As you gain height, the terrain becomes more open and dramatic with excellent views. The hike was tough, although there were fewer narrow danger points than on the drive to the trailhead.
