Small mountain with big views over the inland sea
Mt Shiude (Japanese: 紫雲出山) rises gently above the Shōnai Peninsula of western Kagawa, a low but prominent coastal mountain whose rounded granite summit opens into one of the most expansive views in the Seto Inland Sea. It'snot a dramatic peak in height, yet its topography gives it a distinctive presence. The mountain’s quiet archaeological past blends naturally with its modern reputation as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Setouchi, a place where cherry blossoms, hydrangeas and sea views come together in a single sweep.
The hike from Hakoura Port begins at sea level, making the ascent feel like a true coastal climb. The trail rises steadily through mixed woodland, following a well‑maintained path used by local hikers. As the forest thins, the sea begins to appear between the trees. The climb is gentle but continuous with numerous ups and downs. By the time the ridge is reached, the Seto Inland Sea is already spreading outward.
The summit is a wide, airy terrace where the full panorama unfolds. There is also a car park near the summit so you can expect to meet tourists at the observation deck. In spring, cherry trees frame the sea in pale pink; in early summer, hydrangeas bloom in thick clusters along the ridge. The combination of flowers and ocean light has made Mt Shiude one of the most photographed coastal viewpoints in Japan. For me, it was a gentle antidote to the fiercer peaks I had been climbing on previous days.
