Rugged beauty of the Central Alps

Mt Utsugi (Japanese: 空木岳) is one of the most rugged and beautiful peaks in the Central Alps, a hyakumeizan* mountain defined by long approaches, steep slopes and a summit crowned with dramatic rocky formations. It’s a peak that demands commitment because of the relentless ascent and occasionally hazardous traverses. The trail winds upwards and seemingly endlessly through deep forest before breaking into boulder fields and exposed ridges. When you reach the upper slopes, the massive, jagged rocks of Utsugi’s summit rise like a fortress above you.

For strong hikers, Mt Utsugi can be part of an extraordinary traverse from the Komagatake ropeway, which is a long, demanding route that links several high peaks across the Central Alps. This traverse is one of the finest in Japan, but it requires careful planning and usually an overnight stay at the emergency hut below Utsugi’s summit. The hut sits in a stark, rocky basin, offering basic shelter in a landscape that feels both remote and powerful.

The final climb to the summit is steep and slow, weaving through broken volcanic rock and weather‑worn slabs. The views from the top include the city of Komagane below and stretch across the Central Alps in every direction, revealing the deep valleys and serrated ridges that make this underrated range so compelling.

Mt. Utsugi is not an easy mountain, but its combination of rugged terrain, dramatic geology and the possibility of linking it into a grand traverse makes it unforgettable. It’s a peak that rewards endurance with some of the best alpine scenery in central Japan.
