Remote Gunma peak with expansive views

Mt Shirasuna (Japanese: 白砂山) is a nihyakumeizan* that is one of Gunma’s most remote and demanding peaks. It's a mountain that is deep in the mountains and feels far removed from the busy hiking routes of the region. The journey begins at Lake Nozori, a quiet, high‑elevation lake surrounded by wetlands and rolling hills.

From the lake, the trail rises steadily into dense forest. The topography is rugged and enclosed, with long stretches of steep ascent. The path often threads through tight corridors of trees, climbing over roots and rocky steps as it gains height. Shirasuna’s slopes are sharp and unforgiving, and the remoteness of the area means the trail can feel wild.

As you climb higher, the forest begins to thin and the ridgeline opens. The upper mountain is broad and wind‑exposed, with patches of grassland and scattered rock giving the peak a stark, high‑country atmosphere. The views from these upper slopes are superb with Lake Nozori glimmering far below and the long folds of mountains stretching in every direction. Of course the forests around Nozori and Shirasuna area.

I climbed Shirasuna on a weekend in summer and met very few people all day. After reaching the peak I descended via a loop course that took me through valleys and up minor but picturesque peaks on the way back to the lake.
