The "ship mountain" with a massive cliff

Mt Arafune (Japanese: 荒船山) is one of those mountains whose personality is defined not by its summit, but by the enormous and dramatic cliff that dominates its entire presence. While the peak of this nihyakumeizan* mountain itself is quiet and forested, the cliff dominates the entire area. If you have the courage to go close to the edge, you can see the vast vertical wall of rock plunging hundreds of metres into the valley below.

The approach to Arafune is gentle at first, with occasionally narrow traverses winding through peaceful woodland. Birds move through the trees, and the forest floor is thick with moss and low shrubs. It’s the kind of climb where you settle into a relaxed rhythm, unaware of the drama waiting ahead. Only when the trees thin and the trail begins to climb toward the rim of the cliff does the mountain’s scale become clear. The cliff is a massive slab of exposed stone shaped by tectonic uplift and erosion and the drop is sheer, clean and visually overwhelming.

Mt Arafune may not be famous for its height or difficulty, but this amazing geological feature makes it one of the most memorable mountains in central Japan.
