Mt Asakusa

Mt Asakusa (Japanese: 浅草岳) is a quiet, far‑flung sanbyakumeizan* tucked deep into the Niigata mountains, the kind of peak that feels remote long before you even reach the trailhead. Everything about it carries that sense of distance, a long approach, an impossibly narrow forest road and a trailhead car park that feels far from human civilization.

The climb itself is steady and atmospheric. The trail rises steeply through dense forest before opening into broader slopes higher up, where the mountain’s round grassy summit becomes visible. Although not a huge climb, at times the trail is a messy scramble up steep rocks with chains and ropes. It’s not a dramatic peak in the way some of Niigata’s sharper summits are, but the wide grasslands are a reminder of the comparatively low treeline and the heavy snow that blankets the area in winter. The ridge offers wide and uninterrupted views of Mt Sumon (守門岳) and other surrounding mountains, a reminder of just how far into the interior you’ve traveled.

Asakusa attracts hikers who enjoy lesser‑known peaks and it's certainly an expedition to even get to the trailhead. It's possible to do a long loop course along the ridge line, doubling back to the trailhead car park along an abandoned forest road with rockfalls and collapses.
