Mt Mikuni &
Mt Daigenta

Mt Mikuni (Japanese: 三国山) and Mt Daigenta (大源太山) are quiet, understated peaks straddling the border of Niigata and Gunma. They are relatively unknown peaks that reward hikers who enjoy solitude, history and long ridge walks. The climb begins near the Mikuni Tunnel, where a small parking space marks the start of a lush forest trail leading toward the historic Mikuni Pass. For centuries this pass served as an important route between the Kanto region and Echigo, used by travelers, traders and officials moving through the steep interior ranges.

From the pass, the ascent to Mt Mikuni begins with a succession of very slippery wooden steps. It's an infamous section that demands careful footing, especially after rain. The climb is steep but short, and once you reach the flat summit, the ridge opens into a quieter, more expansive landscape. Wildflowers bloom along the trail in summer, adding color to the deep greens of the forested slopes.

The traverse from Mt Mikuni to Mt Daigenta is tougher than it looks on the map. The ridge undulates constantly, with many ups and downs that test your endurance. Views toward the Naeba area appear along the way, giving glimpses of the larger mountains that dominate this part of the border region. The route is part of the Gunma Trail, and although it is well maintained, it still feels remote and lightly traveled.
