Tough hike up a forested volcano
Mt Sukai (Japanese: 皇海山) is a hyakumeizan* that rises in the Nikko–Oze region as one of Gunma’s most rugged and rewarding mountains. It's known for its long forested ridges, deep valleys and a quiet, remote atmosphere. It's a broad, wooded massif, shaped by long erosion and covered in dense forest. Its upper ridges open gradually, revealing a spacious crest and wide views toward Mt Hiuchi (燧ケ岳), Mt Nikko-Shirane (日光白根山) and the long spine of the Nikko mountains.
The hike from Ginzandaira is now the principal route, a long, steady ascent that captures the mountain’s quiet character. Beginning in the deep forest of the Ginzandaira valley, the trail climbs through cool, shaded woodland, following old forestry paths and narrow ridges that rise toward the high plateau. This approach has become the standard because the old traditional route, once used by most hikers and climbers, is now closed. That historic path, which climbed more directly from the southern side, was shut due to the closure of the long forest road, leaving Ginzandaira as the safest and most reliable access point. The closure means that hikers now approach from a quieter, more secluded valley. I used the traditional route before the collapse of the old road so there is little I can say about the trail from Ginzandaira. I remember being particularly impressed by the beauty of the ancient forest.
