Stunning views over Oze marsh

Mt Shibutsu (Japanese: 至仏山) rises gently yet proudly above the Oze marshlands, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Japan. As a hyakumeizan*, it attracts hikers from across the country, but what truly sets it apart is the abundance of wildflowers that bloom along its slopes and the views over the marshland. In early summer, the mountain becomes a tapestry of delicate alpine plants, many of them rare species that thrive only in Oze’s cool, high‑elevation environment. Their presence is so precious that access to the mountain is restricted at certain times of year to protect them, and hikers must always check seasonal regulations before planning a climb.

The standard route begins at Hatomachi Pass, where a well‑maintained trail leads upward through forest and open slopes. As you climb, the views begin to widen, and by the time you reach the summit ridge, Oze spreads out below in a breathtaking panorama,Mt Hiuchi (燧ケ岳) rising beyond, and the vast basin stretching toward the horizon.

I especially enjoy climbing Mt. Shibutsu in early May, when snow still lingers on the trail and access is unrestricted. The remaining snow adds a quiet, pristine atmosphere, and the contrast between white slopes and the emerging greenery is beautiful. The climb feels peaceful, the crowds are fewer, and the views across Oze are crisp and clear.

Mt. Shibutsu may not be the tallest or the most rugged of the hyakumeizan, but its combination of wildflowers, protected nature and sweeping views makes it one of the most memorable. It’s a mountain where the beauty of Oze comes fully into focus.
