A little known mountain that's best in winter
Mt Minamisawa (Japanese: 南沢山) is one of the seven summits of Achi village in the south of the central Alps and Nagano prefecture. It’s a quiet and understated mountain that reveals its best character in winter. In the green season the relatively low elevation makes for a hot climb, but once the leaves fall and the snow settles, the ridgeline opens beautifully. From the summit you can look across to Mt Ontake (御岳山) rising in its volcanic bulk, and to the northern reaches of the Central Alps where the higher peaks catch the winter light. Nearby Mt Ena (恵那山) and Fujimidai (富士見台) also appear clearly, their distinctive shapes softened by distance and snow.
Although Minamisawa is not especially high, the climb is surprisingly steep in places. The forest is serene with tall trees, soft winter light and a reassuring stillness. It’s a mountain that rewards slow, steady progress rather than speed. I especially enjoy hiking it in snowshoes from the Furusato Mura Shizen-en, although experience driving on snow and ice is advisable if you want to make it to the trailhead in winter. Once on the ridge, it’s easy to extend the hike toward Mt Yokokawa (横川山), following a gentle line of undulations and then a steep climb that stays open enough in winter to offer views and quiet solitude.
Minamisawa is not such a famous peak, but it is one of those mountains that becomes a personal favourite. Its winter clarity, peaceful forest, and the satisfying effort of the climb make it a perfect cold‑season outing.
